Fuji 60mm F2.4 – First Macro Lens for the Fuji X-Pro 1
Fujifilm recently added the Fuji 60mm F2.4 macro lens in its platoon of lenses for their Fuji XF Compact System Cameras, namely the Fuji X-Pro1. This happens to be the first telephoto lens for the Fuji XF mount system, combining the concepts of a fast tele and a macro lens. The greatest aperture of F2.4 can afford very nice portraits while the maximum magnification with this lens is 1:2. This lens provides a field of view which is equivalent to a 91mm lens on a 35mm camera (with a depth of field of F3.6). Having a reasonable weight of 215g, this is a very lightweight lens but with a solid build and robust feel.
The tightly assembled metal body of the lens provides a very durable physical structure, just like the rest of the Fujifilm lenses in the market. The central barrel of the lens extends by about two centimeter at the closest point of its focus. The wide focusing ring at the front of the lens is nicely placed and it is easy to adjust, even though it takes about three complete turns of the ring to bring the lens from infinity to its closest focus point.
Fujifilm follows the retro style in most of its compact system cameras and lenses. This tradition has been retained in this lens which has a manual aperture ring to select the desired aperture. The aperture ring has each full stop marked, and there are click stops for each intermediate 1/3 stop setting. When the distance between the camera and the subject is not too large, auto focus is pretty quick which makes this lens quite suitable for portraits. However, at a very close distance, such as for macro photography, the auto focus is very slow. So during macro photography, it is better to use manual focus instead.
Fuji 60mm F2.4 : Sharp even wide open
Considering form the perspective of sharpness of this lens wide open, this is one of the best lenses in the market. At maximum aperture, sharpness at the center of the image is exceptional while it is still very good at the edges. Best quality is attained between F5.6 and F8 apertures, both in the center and at the edges. Besides, if the focusing distance is not too much, flare does not affect the image. There is also a hood accompanying the lens which does an excellent job in overcoming any kind of flare and shielding the front side of the lens. However, at close focusing distance, there can be a serious issue of internal reflection and flare, which can result in a reduced contrast at the center of the image. This mainly happens when some sort of light source is present at the background or at an angle perpendicular to the lens. This means that special care needs to be taken during macro photography with this lens.
